Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary

For more than 40 years, the Margaretville Auxiliary has been supporting the programs and services at Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center.

Incorporated in January, 1966, the Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to pay for new ambulances, wheelchairs, state-of-the-art medical equipment, Lifeline Personal Response System units for the homebound and elderly, and other hospital-related projects through innovative fund-raising ideas including the annual Antique Flea Market, Easter and Christmas fairs, fashion shows, raffles, bakes sales and successful quilting projects.

And speaking of quilting, the origins of the Auxiliary are connected to sewing. When Margaretville Hospital first opened in 1931, there was a dedicated group of women who mended and repaired thousands of necessary articles for the hospital. In 1947, they formed the Grey Ladies group to assist the staff at the hospital. A call went out for volunteers and the community responded. Under the guidance of Norma Burgin, Marion Munro and Harriet Smith, a large group of enthusiastic women established guidelines, formed committees and elected officers. Some of these original Grey Ladies are still sewing for the hospital and residential care center today.

In January 1966, the present Auxiliary was created from the firm foundation established by the Grey Ladies. Marion Munro was the first president followed by: Henrietta Farber, Marian Connell, Blanche (Gallo) Guinan, Betty Sanford, Pat Shapiro, Dorothy Miller, Margaret Duggan, Terry Cohen, Blanche Drexler, Gloria Kopp, Pat Millen, Edna Squires, Cathy Hinkley, Eleanor Aulino, Roni Daley and Emilie Davenport.

Auxiliary Members Elect Officers for 2010-2012 Term

At the Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held in December, members of the Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center Auxiliary elected officers for the 2010-2012 term.  The new president is Peter L. Molnar, local business owner, community activist and long term auxiliary member.  The other officers are 1st Vice President Tami Conine, 2nd Vice President Kathie Herbst, Secretary Connie Jeffers, and Treasurer Pat Tucker.   All of the new officers have been members and supporters of the auxiliary for many years and have served previously as officers or have volunteered for Auxiliary committees or projects.

Mr. Molnar told the members at the luncheon that the new officers and the Auxiliary Board of Directors had agreed on three primary goals:  update the Auxiliary’s existing by-laws; formalize a working budget; and raise community awareness of the many ways the Auxiliary supports the hospital and the people of the Catskill Region.  “These are important goals because they strengthen the membership’s decision-making and operational foundations. The Auxiliary has grown far beyond being a small group of well intentioned, hard working supporters of the hospital and residential care facility.  We are now a solid partner with the hospital providing additional and substantial financial resources.” <read more>
